    • Working with shapes, lines and colors;
    • Working with different tools to convert, format and edit objects and text
    • Understanding Layer Management in CorelDRAW;
    • Handling bitmaps; adding special effects to bitmaps and managing color displays.

  • The CorelDRAW X4 Official Guide is now available in English

One of the regular question I get is about books related to CorelDRAW. In addition to the amazing CorelDRAW X4 Unleashed eBook that is already available from the CorelDRAW Unleashed web site, I am very happy to announce that McGraw-Hill has just released the CorelDRAW X4 Official Guide, an 892 pages book written by Gary Bouton. Here is a little extract from the cover copy:

Create fine art and commercial graphics with one powerful tool! CorelDRAW X4: The Official Guide shows you how to get a visual message across with impact and style; edit photos; build captivating layouts; and compose scenes in a clean, attention-getting style. Learn how to illustrate like the pros, justify and flow text around shapes, and truly understand digital color. You'll also discover how to create 3D objects, apply special effects, and integrate different media to build outstanding graphics. Packed with expert tips and techniques for creating professional-level art, this is your one-stop CorelDRAW X4 resource.

More information about this book is available on the McGraw-Hill web site, including the full table of content.

You can get this book from your favourite book store (ISBN number 9780071545709) as well as from the Corel eStore in the USA and in Canada (for now). And if you are outside of North America, we are working with McGraw-Hill to have this book available around the world and even have it translated in certain languages. I hope to have more details about this to share in the future.

  • Lenovo introduces a new 17'' laptop for graphic designers...

In recent years, more laptops than desktop computers have been sold around the world as people prefer the benefits of mobility and form-factor. But when it comes to graphics design, these smaller devices have always been limiting and required to carry around a lot of different accessories next to the main computer when you wanted to be mobile: a Wacom tablet, a Huey Stick color calibration device and more.

Well, looks like Lenovo is offering a new laptop aimed specifically at the graphics designers: the ThinkPad W700. In addition to a huge 17-inch display and an Intel Quad Core Extreme CPU, it includes an nVidia Quadro FX 370 graphics chipset with 1GB of video RAM, up to 8 GB of memory and more disk space than you can think of. But these specs would make it a high-end gaming laptop. What makes this one a very interesting solution for graphics designers is that it includes both a Wacom tablet (to the right of the trackpad) as well as an on-board color calibration system. Yes, it gets a little pricy (about $3,000 for the starting price), reason why I don't think I will be able to test one in the near future Cool

Engadget has more information and a gallery with photos of the W700 online.

  • CorelDRAW X4 Unleashed eBook is available

If you use CorelDRAW, you must have heard about CorelDRAW Unleashed. In addition to the recently held User Conference in Phoenix, Arizona, Foster Coburn III and the team behind CorelDRAW Unleashed is also organizing regular bootcamps, publishes the CorelDRAW Unleashed Magazine (available for free) and releases great learning resources about CorelDRAW Graphics Suite, including the CorelDRAW Unleashed eBook series.

The latest addition to the series is the brand new CorelDRAW X4 Unleashed eBook. To quote the information on the site: "This is a 932 page ebook featuring full color pages of detailed information on getting the most from CorelDRAW X4. Not only will you get an illustrated description of how a feature works, you'll also get more than eleven and a half hours of multimedia tutorials to help you fully understand what you've read. This book was fully designed to get the very most from the PDF format with links to useful Web pages, links to the multimedia tutorials and links to other related information within the book. Sample files are provided so that you can work along while reading and watching. This is the most complete learning tool available for CorelDRAW X4!

And to make your choice just a little bit more difficult, a special Premium Bonus Content Edition adds more than eleven and a half hours of movies to the CorelDRAW X4 Unleashed eBook, plus 3.5 gigabytes of bonus content, including a 120+ page ebook on Corel PHOTO-PAINT X4 with accompanying movies, 37 Powertips on CorelDRAW and/or Corel PHOTO-PAINT with accompanying movies and a lot more.

You can get the eBook from the CorelDRAW Unleashed site now, pre-order the Premium Bonus Content Edition there as well (should be shipping shortly according to Foster). We are also working with Foster to get the eBook available on the Corel eStore in the near future.

  • Announcing Corel DESIGNER Technical Suite X4

Earlier today, Corel announced Corel DESIGNER Technical Suite X4.

Corel DESIGNER X4 expands on the features and functionality of CorelDRAW X4 to add specific tools and benefits for technical graphics and illustration. For example, technical illustrations rely on callouts to provide additional information on specific objects, such as parts numbers, magnifying effects or text descriptions. A key requirement for technical illustrations is that halos surround callouts (and other explanatory lines in the drawing) so that they are easily readable in complex graphics. Creating halos with creative graphics applications requires 10 to 15 steps. However, with the specialized features provided by Corel DESIGNER X4, halos are created automatically with callouts and now also with other types of lines and curves. Other features include CADCAM 3D formats import, enhanced diagramming features and a lot more.Find out more information on your local Corel site:

You can also dowload the trial version of Corel DESIGNER Technical Suite X4 from the download section on the community site.

  • Corel Insider blog just launched...

The first post in the Corel Insider blog was published today. This blog will include articles written by various people working on CorelDRAW @ Corel about various aspects of the product. As a warning before you dive in there, some of these posts will be very technical, but will add a lot of in-depth information to those of you who are in VBA and object models for example. The first post for example from Alex is about the Corel Query Language.

  • Installing CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X4 Service Pack 1

One additional comment regarding Service Pack 1 for CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X4. As reported by some of you in the forums, after applying the SP1 patch, some customers launching CorelDRAW or Corel PHOTO-PAINT will receive the following error: "Fail to load the appboxid.xml file." Followed by a "Runtime Error!"

There are two possible solutions to this problem from the information we have and the reports from the forums:

Turn off virus protection/firewall when installing the SP1 Patch. It will start up again on reboot. If you are worried about disabling virus protection/firewall, and as long as the patch or software upgrade is fully downloaded on the system already, you can disconnect your internet cable during the installation process of the service pack.

If you are still getting the error try installing/re-installing the Microsoft 6.0 XML Parser. This should allow CorelDRAW and Corel PHOTO-PAINT to launch again.

  • Video of the X4 SP1 auto-update process

As mentioned a little over a week, the Service Pack 1 for CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X4 is available. I've uploaded a little video to YouTube and Vimeo to show you how easy it is to get Service Pack 1 from within CorelDRAW X4 (it's the same from Corel PHOTO-PAINT). At the end of this video, you will also notice the new splash-screen that enables you to easily identify if Service Pack 1 is installed or not. One more thing, this video is real-time on my Vista Ultimate 64-bit computer (no accelerated application load or installation time).

  • Monthly online chat session with Corel

A few month back, we added live chat capabilities on CorelDRAW.com (in beta) to enable a better communication amongst community members. One of the challenges we've noticed is that nobody is online at the same time. Therefore the usage of the chat rooms hasn't been very big so far. In addition, you've certainly noticed a few people from Corel participating in the forums on a regular basis, and we wanted to go to the next level.

Starting next Friday, a certain number of people from Corel who work on the CorelDRAW product family will join the "CorelDRAW.com" chat room for one hour, starting 11 AM Eastern Time (the time zone where Ottawa, ON, Canada is located, e.g. where CorelDRAW comes from) to have a discussion with the members of the community and to (try to) answer your questions. This will repeat every second Friday of the month at the same time and place. Here is a link to see what time that is in your time zone. There is currently a limit to 100 participants in the chat room

For all of you who will attend the CorelDRAW Unleashed Conference, you'll actually have the chance to talk face-to-face with my colleagues from Corel (even better). For those who really cannot make it to Arizona, I look forward to chatting with you then.

To summarize, come and join us in a live chat session every 2nd Friday of the month at 11 AM Eastern Time.

  • CorelDRAW Unleashed user conference next week

As you certainly know by now, the CorelDRAW Unleashed user conference starts next week in Phoenix, Arizona in the USA. The line-up of tracks is really great, covering from beginners to advanced usage of CorelDRAW Graphics Suite, Wilcom DecoStudio and much more. These will be an amazing 4 days full packed with valuable information. If you have not yet confirmed you attendance to the user conference, I highly recommend you do it now. There are really cheap flights available on Lastminute.com or Priceline.com for example as you.

Sadly, I will not be able to attend the conference this year (my wife and I are expecting a baby shortly), but John Falsetto (Product Manager for CorelDRAW Graphics Suite) and Tony Severenuk (User Experience Designer for CorelDRAW) from Corel will both attend the conference.

  • CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X4 Service Pack 1

As a follow-up to my two previous posts regarding SP1 (general info and specific about RAW), I wanted to provide additional information about when it will be released, what is included with SP1 and how you can get it.

First things first: When? Everything is on track for Corel to release Service Pack 1 for CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X4 tomorrow.

What's included? We've worked very hard going through your feedback in the forums to make sure that this service pack provided you with solutions to your main problems. I've included a copy of the read-me document that comes with SP1 and describes all the changes included at the bottom of this blog post. One thing not listed in the readme is that we have a new splash-screen that will make it easy to know if you have SP1 installed or not. If you have a flat balloon when launching CorelDRAW or PHOTO-PAINT X4, you don't have Service Pack 1 installed.

How can I get my hands on it? With the release of SP1, we will start pushing the service pack through Automatic Update in the Welcome screen in a staggered approach. This means that next time you launch CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X4 within the next week or so, you will be able to automatically install Service Pack 1 from within the application. The other option for you to get your hands on SP1 will be to download it from http://www.corel.com starting tomorrow morning (Ottawa time).

We highly recommend to install SP1 on every language that CorelDRAW is currently available in: English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Swedish, Finish, Polish, Czech, Hungarian and Russian. The upcoming Asian language, once released, will have SP1 included.

Thank you to the team at Corel and the beta testers who worked hard since the launch of CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X4 to get Service Pack 1 out of the door.

CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X4 - Readme Notes

CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X4 Service Pack 1

    Installer

    • Additional content is installed into separate folders according to type (clipart, objects, or photos). Shortcuts to these folders are added to the Start menu to facilitate browsing to the content.

    CorelDRAW

    Application workspace

    • The Scrapbook docker has been added to the default workspace. You must reset your workspace to see this change.
    • Quitting CorelDRAW with the Snap to Grid option enabled no longer produces an error.
    • The resolution of a selected bitmap is now displayed on the status bar.
    • Locking guidelines when the rotation handles are visible no longer produces an error.

    Display

    • Page display issues no longer occur when you use certain touch-pad or scrolling devices.
    • Dialog boxes and dockers are now properly sized when certain video device drivers and settings (specifically nView) are used.

    Document Controls

    • Several enhancements were made to the Object Manager docker to enhance the new layer structure functionality:
      • The layer structure and layer names are now retained when you open a file from a previous version and then save it back to a previous version.
      • Files that have a consistent layer structure throughout the document can now be saved back to previous versions with the layer structure intact and layer names retained.
      • Toggling the Show/Hide icon in the Layer Manager view shows or hides the Master Layer on a specific page. If changes are made while not in the Layer Manager view, the settings for the Master Layer are applied to the entire document.
      • Master Layers remain at the bottom of the layers list when a new page is inserted.
      • When you drag guidelines onto the page, they are added to the Master Guide layer as they were in previous versions. If you have a local Guides layer selected and then drag a guideline to the page, it is added to the local Guides layer. Guides can still be moved from the Guides layers to the Master Guide layer. If you prefer to add guides to the local Guides layer, you must edit the registry key at: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Corel\CorelDRAW\14.0\CorelDRAW\Application Preferences\Guides\GuidelinesOnMasterPage. A value of 1 adds guides to the Master Page; a value of 0 adds guides to the local Guides layer.

    Text

    • Mirroring or resizing paragraph text with the Text > Show Non-Printing Characters command enabled no longer displays an error.
    • Shortcuts for increasing and decreasing text size are now working in both Edit state and Pick state.
    • Adjusting line, character, or word spacing interactively with the Shape tool in any display mode no longer results in a crash.
    • When you are moving a text object to duplicate it at a specific position, the original is now displayed when you press the plus sign or spacebar, or when you right-click. This enhancement can help you position the duplicate in relation to the original text object.
    • Numbers entered by using an Asian IME are now marked with a Latin language ID. A Latin font can be applied without having to change the language of numbers.
    • When you open files from earlier versions that contain text on a path, the text no longer shifts from its original position.
    • Hovering over the Font Size list box applies the change only after you click the new font size.
    • When TrueDoc is used to embed fonts within a document, double-byte and bidirectional fonts are not supported.
    • Bullets, drop caps, and indents in paragraph text that has Right to Left direction are converted to curves when the file is saved to CorelDRAW versions 13.0 and earlier.

    Tools

    • Applying the Undo command on dimension lines no longer produces an error.

    Vector Effects

    • When editing PowerClip objects and symbols, the object inside the linked group is now selected by default.

    OLE

    • OLE support for Excel 2007 tables has been enhanced.
    • CorelDRAW is now fully terminated when it completes an OLE session as a server.
    • When you work in a container application, editing the TextFont Options no longer produces an error.
    • When CorelDRAW is run as a server application, the Print command no longer becomes disabled.

    Web Functions

    • The Automatically Hyperlink feature has been enhanced for Asian languages.

    Bitmap Controls & Effects

    • Information about bitmap resolution is now displayed on the status bar.
    • When bitmaps are exported, bitmap inflation and anti-aliasing of straight lines no longer occur due to a change in the anti-aliasing behavior during export.

    Object Attributes & Controls

    • The Apply to Duplicate option in the Transformation docker creates a duplicate the first time you use the option.
    • Sampling colors by using the Eyedropper tool has been enhanced to improve compatibility with Asian operating systems.
    • The Replace text properties feature in the Replace Wizard has been enhanced to work with double-byte text.
    • When arrowheads are added to dimension lines, the arrowheads are added only to the line that contains the dimension text.
    • When dimension lines are selected, the pen outline attributes are now correctly displayed in the Pen Outline dialog box.

    Corel PHOTO-PAINT

    Lenses

    • Copying a lens in Corel PHOTO-PAINT no longer results in program instability.

    Tools

    • Deleted nibs are now removed from the Brush Settings docker, thus making nibs easier to manage.

    Printing

    • Print separations in Corel PHOTO-PAINT no longer produces unnecessary empty plates.
    • Print Merge has been enhanced to recognize RTF & CSV files saved from within the Wizard.
    • Print Preview is no longer missing any printing boundaries areas of the current driver.

    • Publish to PDF: Spot colors assigned to fills and outlines are now maintained in monochrome bitmaps.
    • The autosensing functionality during PDF import has been enhanced. If a file is saved with the AI compatibility option enabled, it is opened as a PDF file by default; if you wish to open the PDF as an AI file, you must select the AI - Adobe Illustrator filter in the Import dialog box.
    • Import PDF: When text is imported as curves and the text font is not available on the computer, the curves are created by using the embedded font within the PDF file; if the font is not embedded, the Panose Font Matching dialog box will be invoked.
