I would go the contour route as Val P mentioned. Using both inside and outside contours.

     contour for creating sign

Thanks Fluid - that is exactly the effect that I need.  I am "user challenged" with CorelX3, so I will have to play with it to figure out exactly what you were telling me to do - but you have put me on the right track.  I understand what you say I need to do, now I just have to figure out how to accomplish it.  It is embarrasing to be asking what is probably dumb questions of those of you who are familiar with Corel - but I guess we all started somewhere.  Thank you so much!

You're welcome! It's an effect I hadn't actually tried for before, so I learned a few things myself in production. Wink I just knew it could be done and had some ideas and tried out a few. I left out the ones that didn't work or wouldn't teach anything useful, LOL. Have fun! Val P.

Re: Help for the absolute basic beginner

I really appreciate the help.  I have tried to create a Rope border to carve - for a picture frame.  I hope to use the frame for making picture frames in my CarveWright.  I imported it into my software and it kind of works - but needs more tweeking and I honestly don't have a clue as to what to do.  Any help/suggestions will be appreciated.  I would also like to get rid of the obvious "circle" at the very top/center of the oval.

There are several ways to fix the top, smartfill or welding.  Here's how you can do it with trim:

Re: Help for the absolute basic beginner

Thanks Hendrik for the tutorial.  I am embarrased, but I am an absolute beginner and need some help with the tutorial.  I hate to tell you this, but I understand what you are telling me to do - I just do not where all of the "controls" are located to accomplish your tasks.  For example, how do I increase the number of sides?   If you could also insert the command for each step - it would be very helpful.  I had a heck of a time just finding the Transformation dockerEmbarrassed  I really appreciate all of the help that this Forum offers - you guys (and gals) are a great bunch!

Here is what I have accomplished so far  Incidentaly your rope (finished product) is exactly what I need - only in grey scale.

Re: Help for the absolute basic beginner

Another method is to create one rope element. Add to custom spraylist. Apply to an ellipse and adjust the settings until your happy with the result. Ill post a visual later. I did one up a while back and need to find it.

Until then I can always send one to you but learning how to do it is the best option
