    Cannot open cdr file

I created a file in Corel Draw 13 on my computer and sent the design to my sister who also has Corel Draw 13. She cannot open the file and gets a message that the file "is not importable using the selected filters or this format is not supported." We can't figure out what is different between her program and mine. She is on Vista and I am using Windows XP, but this seems more to be a problem with the Corel Draw X3 program. Any suggestions on what to do to open the file?

To my knowledge, the file format hasn't changed between any version of CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X3. I guess you've sent the file in a Zipped format so that you can make sure there are no problems with the transmission?

    Answer

Hmmm.....not a fix, but maybe you could try and save it as a CMX and send it again. See if that works. Just an idea. Can't imagine why the CDR won't open. I have taken X3 files from my Vista machine at work and edited them on my XP machine at home with no prob (and vise-versa).

    Hope that helps!Big Smile

    Re: Cannot open cdr file

Hi, I am new here and maybe this has nothing to do with your problem, but I was thinking that since "importing was mentioned" that maybe your sister was trying to import the file with the "A" tool highlighted and you may actually need to have the "Pick" tool highlighted instead. The other thing I thought of was she should just double click on the file name and let CorelDraw open it (instead of importing it). These may be too basic, but sometimes the obvious is overlooked.

    Re: Cannot open cdr file

Do you have ANY bitmaps within the file ? I've had that problem on three occasions and in each case a bitmap within the file had "magically" changed itself into a.eps format. Clicking on the image and converting back to a bitmap (using the same dpi / pixel resolution) and resaving the file has worked for me each time.

I know this an old thread, but I need the answer, too!  I created several files on my laptop, then burned them to a CD to take to the PC that is attached to our laser engraver.  The computer won't "read" the cdr files!  No pencil icon comes up, and after trying to "read" the CD for literally an hour......you have to reboot the system!  Please, don't tell me you can't copy files to a portable media....this is going to make our lives very difficult!  Thanks for any response to the problem.  I am going to keep reading, but have seen several threads with "issues" with X3 and file saves, and it is making me very sorry that I shelled out money for this program!

    Lisa,

I don't think it has anything to do with CDR files. Sounds like the CD
itself is bad. I can't tell you why it is bad.

Typically backing files up to a CD is a good form of backup, though it
shouldn't be your only backup copy just in case.

That is a possibility, but DH just called me and said that it would not work on the PC but it did work on his laptop.  This really has me puzzled.  Guess it could be a glitch with the CD.  Glad to know that I should be able to design on my laptop and carry the files to the other computers...I was worried for a while there!  Surprise

    Lisa,

It could be the drive on the PC is more sensitive and thus requires a high
quality disc. Sometimes this is the sign of a driving starting to fail. It
could also be the sign of the disc itself being borderline and the laptop
drive just does a better job of resolving the errors.

The important thing relative to your original question is that it has
nothing to do with CDR files.

That's interesting...It just dawned on me that the laptop that will read it is Vista, while both computers that won't are XP, however the CD was created on one with XP.  Not sure if it is related, but is definately something that might be cause for consideration.

    Hello Lisa

Have you tried to send the .cdr through mail or if it is a big file, throug www.yousendit.com

that way you can exclude the the cd problem

    when you reinstalled yoy corel

did you remove the user files from your pc

because i had similar problem on corel 11.0, and it was resolved when i removed all user specific files (customization), and then corel started perfect again
