    Font freezing problem in X3

    Hello,

X3 freezes whenever I click on a font in a Corel design I had created. It also freezes when I click on the "A" in the font menu.

What could be causing this? I have to continually close out Corel and then it happens again the next time. I tried reinstalling Corel X3 but I still have the same problem.

I also checked for corrupted fonts, several of them had 0 bytes which means they're corrupt. Delating and reinstalling those fonts gave them the necessary bytes, but then I saw other fonts being turned into 0 bytes that previously were not 0. What is happening?

It started when I downloaded a free font from the internet, but I have long since deleted that.

    Any help is appreciated.

    Mike

on the first access to a text tool or a text object DRAW reads the whole font list and each and every font in order to build their graphic representation. If your pc is freezing then I guess diabling this new feature would solve the delay completely: uncheck the option in menu Text->Font list options->"Use font to display font name"

I also had this problem a few days ago. I removed over 400 fonts out of 750. Problem hasn't returned (yet).

    What OS are you  running?

How many fonts do you have loaded (installed in windows) on your system?

Re: Font freezing problem in X3

Thanks to all for the assistance.

Os: When I disabled that one box in the text file, I could click onto the font of the word that I had made without it freezing but it didn't identify the font name up top, so I checked the box on again like how it was. Meanwhile, clicking onto the "A" on the left side menu to type new font still froze Corel.

Signage: My OS is Windows XP. I'm not at work today but it is a fast computer with at least 1gig of RAM, a fast processor and only 1/4 full on the drive. (In other words it's not a Celeron piece of junk with like 64 RAM and limited space.) I use the Font Navigator that came with Corel X3. I have 20,000 fonts in the Navigator, and I had close to 500 installed in my Windows/Font folder when the problem started. I have since deleted the ones that I don't need and have it down to around 470. I made sure to keep the required fonts for Windows and Corel, but I noticed when I rebooted that the font was Impact in the words "Windows starting up..."

Here is another explanation on what is happening. When I click on the font it hangs up (hourglass icon) for several minutes. Once in a while it will acknowledge the font after 3-5 minutes and things begin to work, although the font drop down menu doesn't allow me to scroll smoothly through the list. Meanwhile, Word Perfect works fine when I change fonts in that program.

I also called the support phone # and I tried their suggestion by trying Corel in safe mode and it still froze on me with the font.

I decided to select-delete all the fonts except the necessary ones through Control Panel/Fonts and for some odd reason none of the fonts got deleted and when I checked the list again in detail, all the fonts had a byte number.

Madison and Alexei: I think I will remove more fonts and try to get it under 400. I'll see if the problem persists after I get the list down.

Thanks again, I do try all suggestions. I just want everything to go back to the way it was without the freezing or hanging up. I also tried to do a sytem restore and it wouldn't go back to even a few days ago.

Sounds like you may have a corrupted font, check the size of the font files with another machine if you have one to compare it with!

Don't think this is your problem, but try to find and delete the following file:

    C:\Documents and Settings\ <your user name> \Application Data\Corel\Graphics13\User Draw\FontlistMRU.xml

It is absolutely safe to delete and will be restored automatically, but will be smaller in size.

    Answer

Problem solved, thanks to everyone for the assistance.

I got my fonts down to under 300 and it is working smoothly now. The drop down list is much less easier to navigate, and there are no more freeze ups.

I'll keep the other suggestions in mind. It's always good to delete useless space wasters.

    Glad your problem is solved.

Regarding the FontlistMRU.xml, it is not really a space waster. The problem with that file is (or maybe was, I think it was solved in one of the Service Packs) that is is read the first time you use the Text tool, and fonts are then verified. Since it tends to grow over time, it may take some time to verify the fonts, especially if they are not present.
At least that's how I think it works but as I said, it looks like the problem was fixed with one of the SPs.

Regarding my reply: "I also had this problem a few days ago. I removed over 400 fonts out of 750. Problem hasn't returned (yet)."

It's been 12 days so far and the problem has not returned at all.

Deleting that file solved my font freezing problem completely. Thanks for the tip.

Re: Font freezing problem in X3

Since we're all font experts here..

There is a program called HP Fontsmart that i used to use with Windows 98.. works exactly liek Fontnavigator - only better

The program does not work with XP, and I'm almost certain it won't work with Vista.

Does anybody know of a version of that program or a similar program I can use for XP or Vista..

or is the latest Font Navigator very good.
