So we just upgraded 1 user from X3 to X4.  Guess what:  X4 may SAY its backwords compatible, but it isnt.  Not 100% anyway.  When i Save As... from  X4 and choose version 13 to save as it takes a long time, then when i open on X3 the layers are totally screwed.  By totally screwed in mean all hundred and something icons are on the same layer all overlapping and the layer names are changed to layer 1, layer 2 etc.  We were planning on upgrading slowly, but this is a big problem.  We use custom template files to hand out projects to illustrators and all of our templates have between 10 and 22 layers, so you can imagine my frustration.

Anyone know if im doing something wrong or is this a known issue?

Epicor,

I don't know that you are doing anything wrong and I don't think it is a
known "issue".

CorelDRAW X4 dramatically changed how layers work. So I think what you're
seeing is working exactly as designed. Not saying this is what you want,
just how Corel designed it to be for good or bad. This only occurs if you
save backwards to a version that doesn't support individual layers on pages.
Since X4 was the first version to support that feature, all previous
versions will be screwy if you save backwards.

So there are really two solutions. Either all users stay on X3 or all users
go to X4. Either way, things would work as expected.

I don't know for sure, but I think you could ignore the "new feature" of X4's layers being individual to pages and just use a master layer as per X3 and before...  Could be a solution?

yeah probably should have mentioned that.  every layer that got messed up is a master layer.  They are used to store icons and whatnot for each page and are just off the page space.
