    Think like the computer...

When you hit that dialogue it likely goes off and looks for issues using 'Prefilght'.

You might have found a bug in the Preflight processor.

What about instead of looking for objects that kill the file you try to delete all the objects that you know work OK first.

It's unlikely to be simple objects or normal bitmaps, so delete all those first and test it again.

Eventually you should get to the specific object. Then you can report it and IT will be able to process you file to see if it's just a freak error or a progam fault.

You could also open the dialogue and turn off all Preflight stuff, and save that as a PDF type and see if that makes a difference. I suspect you are only turning off the reporting and not the process itself but it might be worth a try at least.

I decided not to start a new thread but I hope someone looks at this and can provide some tips.... I'm completely lost for ideas.

I have been using CD for years and have also been using Publish to PDF both for a printer(Prepress) and emailing to my readers. since installing X4 I have have had numerous errors and CD crashes. The latest a brochure that I have produced for a group which needs to be created in Print quality keeps crashing the programme.

The crunch comes when I resolve issues, namely "not all charachters will display in the final PDF document" with the suggestion to enable the unicode option which I have also been doing for years.

If I ignore this and publish to PDF the result is UGLY with background textures not coming out the same as in in Print Preview but it does produce the PDF. If I enable the Unicode option and save the programme just stops.....

    Any ideas???

Re: PDF settings click kills program

I've had the same issue here in the last few days. That is an instant crash when chaning PDF settings. But I'm using SP1 Slipstream so I wondered if that was fixed by SP1?

Following what you are saying above Kelvin is difficult.

I've had this message -- "not all charachters will display in the final PDF document"

But I've never seen an impact in the PDF.

I think you need a different method for creating a PDF if this have not been resolved in SP1. IE Acrobat or one of the other products.

Personally I don't use PDF for print but PS files printed to disk using the same Postscript driver as the RIP. I only use "Export PDF" for client softproofs.

You can use GhostScript which is free to check those files. http://pages.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/

Ask the printer for a copy of his printer driver and explain what you intend to do.

For outputs to high resolution devices text as curves is perfect. For softproofs (screen) it's way better to embed fonts thereby getting the benefit of hinting on display.

     Yani

Thanks for responding, I did finish up getting a PDF that worked. I gradually went thru each item of Text and converted them to curves, each time checking to see if the problem was resolved and after a couple of tries it worked.

When I took on the job as editor for the magazine the printer specified PDF and I have been happy to comply. When I get time I will try the Postscript file option.

    Once again THANKS

    Kelvin
