How to import Legacy FontNav groups?

    Hi guys,

Here's a problem I hope to get help with. Over the years I've been building a catalogue of fonts using FontNav. It's taken a lot of time and effort to create custom categories by style and by client for my font collection (over 18-thousand) but it's all been worthwile since the categories have allowed me to quickly lookup fonts for my projects. As a precaution, I've always made backups of the FontNav (.fng) group files, which has been extremely handy when rebuilding a machine. All that was required was to copy the backup (.fng) files into the C:\Program Files\Corel\CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X4\FontNav\Groups folder and bingo! My Groups would show in FontNav's Groups pane.

After installing Corel X4 the new FontNav brought in automatically the Groups I had installed from X3 (and before) and there was no problem. However, after a new system rebuild, I find that the new FontNav won't take or import my old (.fng) files anymore!! It seems that Groups are created and handled differently now. There's no Groups folder in C:\Program Files\Corel\CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X4\FontNav or anywhere else. I created a couple of test groups but could not locate the corresponding (.fng) files anywhere! What's worse; There's no option in the new FontNav to import my custom groups! It seems that the only workaround is to uninstall X4; install X3; bring in my custom groups; and then reinstall X4. But then, How do I back up my groups again after I add new fonts to them (which I'm always doing as I acquire new fonts)?

So, the question is; How do I bring my custom Groups into the X4 version of FontNav and how do I back them up again after updating them? Where are the Groups being stored now? I did a system-wide search for the names of the test groups I created and got zero results. This is a serioius issue for me. If I had a couple hundred fonts recreating the Groups from scratch would not be too much of a hassle; but at several thousands acquired over the years it becomes a huge problem. If FontNav won't import my legacy Groups; Is there a hack to do it? And if not; Is there another font management program that will import my (.fng) group files?

    Thanks!!!!

Font group (*.fng) files are, in X4, now conveniently located in C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Bitstream\Font Navigator\6.0\Groups\

    I hope this helps...

actually, that's a very strange path, David. I would presume you're on a
network at work with roaming profiles enabled?

For XP the path should be C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application
    Data\Bitstream\Font Navigator\6.0\Groups

But even the Vista path does not normally look like that. Are you using a
    roaming profile on a network?

Awesome!!! You guys kick royal bum!

Here's a weird detail. I looked in the ..Bitstream\Font Navigator\6.0\Groups folder and the test groups I had created were in there. However, when I ran a systemwide Search for them two days ago they didn't show up. Spooky!

All is good now, though. Thanks, guys!!!!

unless you've specifically told the Windows Search function to search for
system and/or hidden folders and files, it wouldn't find them.
