    Slicing in PP

I can't get the slices to "export for web". PP just sends out duplicates of a hodge-podge mess. Opened same cpt file in v.12 and slices went out fine. Am I doing something different or wrong or is this 'to be addressed' in a Service Pack?

Well, you didn't state exactly what you were doing, Tony, so it's difficult
for any one to say if you're doing something wrong or not. I just tried it
myself and got image slices to export in X4.

    Re: Slicing in PP

    1) created image in Draw (http://www.tonydmarketingwizard.com/emails/xmas_holiday_gifts_924.html).

    2) created a blank doc in PP, cut & paste image from Draw;

    3) Flattened (Cntl/shift/dwn arrow) to combine with background

    4) activated slicing tool and tried both 'equal slice' and 'manual horizontal and vertical slice' tools.

    5) File, Export for Web, and tried all combinations of selecting images only, html & images, use html name... etc etc. Yes, slices check box was selected

    6) I'm did the same steps in V12 and it went out fine. (above link)

Here is a link to the output from X4. These are both 2 x 5 tables. http://www.tonydmarketingwizard.com/slicesx4.html

    Thanks, any help is appreciated.

    Re: Slicing in PP

I reported this problem earlier this year (April ?).  I have been awaiting for some response or action, but none has been forthcoming.  Another user clued me in on the fact that it appears to occur if the original image is over a certain number of pixels wide.  I can't put my finger on my notes, but I seem to recall the image did not have to be too wide (one that I had a problem with I think was like 3000 pixels wide).  I had to do the job manually, quite tedious.  I had done a project some time ago with an earlier release (probably 12) and had no problems but it failed for me with X4 and with X3 which I hadn't deleted yet.

Try reducing the width of your image and see if it works for you then.

don't know what to say, Tony - I took a photo, told PP to do equal slices
and tried both with/without HTML and it sliced fine. I even went in and told
it do create different file types for each "row"... and then even duped the
background, desaturated it so I could tell the 2 apart, erased parts of the
grayscale version so there were varying color/gray versions of the image and
made sure that the differentiations between the two objects did NOT fall on
a slice line - again, with or without HTML it sliced fine.

For what you showed, though, why would you even use the slice tool? That is
a pretty basic design that you could have just done the individual items and
placed in a page. Why are you wanting to slice it instead of just use the
    individual elements?

    Re: Slicing in PP

It's a known issue and only mucks up with bigger images. Not sure just where bigger starts.

    http://www.sliceimage.com/howto/slice-image-html-slicing

I would NEVER slice an image for a web job for 3 reasons

    1. It's such a porno site approach - I dislike the way they draw to screen

    2. Unless you go to a lot of effort and specify different levels of compression for different image bits it makes very little difference

    3. Progressive JPG is so much slicker

I can see reasons, now and then, for wanting to slice. But for the most
part, if my "slice" is a solid color, it's better to apply the color via
    CSS.

    > 3. Progressive JPG is so much slicker

See, I *hate* "progressive" images and they way they draw to the screen. For
me, whether or not it's the actual case, the gradual drawing of the image
makes it appear to load slower.

Just a touch of clarification. These pages are not for the web, these are e-mails being sent via Constant Contact. I'm testing now the same image as a progressive jpg and gif. Both exported about 350kb in size which I guess is now acceptable size to e-mail. Just have to confirm 'linking' in PP works.

Thanks to all for the feedback.

technically, that's still for the web, Tony. It's using HTML.

That depends on the end-user. You have no way of knowing what the end-user's
mailbox limit is, whether or not they're already at a point where they can
no longer accept attachments. PP and/or Draw should not be used to create
the HTML for these, IMO - you just don't have the control, nor does it
produce code that is up to current standards.

    Re: Slicing in PP

Constant Contact I don't know... but

if you are creating HTML for email you should do a Google and pick up some of the info of what doesn't work. I think Sitepoint had a good article on this recently.

The worse offenders were Outlook 2007 (tipical) and Gmail.

I'll find it for you as it is important... http://www.sitepoint.com/article/code-html-email-newsletters/

And in the HTML you can put the images as links back to the server as opposed to an attachment so size is less of an issue.
