    Unable to Open DWG Files

    Hi All,

Am new to CorelDraw and just started trialing X4. Have had little luck opening basic 2D .dwg files so far; one small one opened successfully and looked good, but the others freeze up in the process or present a blank page. I select default settings and accept various, normal-looking error messages regarding missing fonts and text box size. CDX4 slooowly gets about 2/3 way in the process, then freezes. I have to kill the program to get out and try again.

These .dwg files open OK in my CAD program, nothing weird about them as far as I know, although not created by me. Same with a .dxf file.

Should I expect Draw X4 to successfully open any .dwg/.dxf file, or is it dependent on the CAD file itself, i.e. some will open and others not?

Does Designer X4 handle CAD files better than Draw, or do they both use the same engine for this process?

Thanks in advance for any solutions or recommendations.

    Cheers,

Depending on how complex the file is, that "freeze" may not be a freeze at all. Complex Autocad files can take a very long time to open -- 20 minutes would not be unusual for a file with tens of thousands of autocad objects--which in itself is not unusual. For instance in Autocad files of buildings, a toilet might be 30 objects, some windows 100 objects (one person reported receiving a file with 1,400 elements per window)! (each window, each toilet)--and I have received autocad files of convention hotels with hundreds of toilets, thousands of electrical outlets, phones outlets, hundreds of chairs (each chair about 25 elements).

Also be sure your CDR disk work areas (Options > memory > swap disks) are not constrained for space--a complex Autocad will require a lot of disk space while working. Remember that Autocad itself is usually run on heavy duty hardware.

Not saying these are you problem, but Autocad files can tax a PC beyond normal limits,

Sending again; the great censor seems to have eaten my original post because I referred to another plumbing fixture common in Autocad files. So I will try with "sinks" which have just as many objects.

Depending on how complex the file is, that "freeze" may not be a freeze at all. Re: Unable to Open DWG Files

I bring DWG and DXF files in to CorelDRAW X4 quite regularly. I do find that the results are more successful, and require less tidying, if the files have been produced by AutoCAD, rather than some other programs that can save files as DWG or DXF.

Sometimes, a DWG (or DXF) file that is opened in CorelDRAW looks as though the page is blank. Remember that the units of the DWG file are actual 'real-world' units so if you are trying to open a drawing of a shopping mall for example, the area that your screen is looking at might correspond to an empty area in the drawing, the drawing itself being perhaps hundreds of feet across in AutoCAD's Model Space. You will have to scale the drawing to suit the size of paper that you are planning to use. Also, you can look at the Object Manager to see what objects have been brought in to your drawing.

I hope that helps a bit Smile

CAD files cannot be compressed or they will not open.
